White Horse Tavern: Rich in Food and History

January 20,2022 | By Centennial Properties

When you think about cities that are rich in history, New York City is going to be on that list. Tourists flock to NYC to experience sights like the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Federal Hall, and the Empire State Building in person. In 2019, NYC hosted around 66.6 million new visitors. While that number has obviously dropped since the pandemic, it's slowly starting to climb back up again as cities reopen and people feel more comfortable traveling again. These historically-significant treasures are also why many people want to move to the city.

But NYC's allure isn't only its history, it also has an incredible food scene as well. There are a lot of new up-and-coming restaurants that are taking NYC by storm — some of which we've written about before — but there are some local staples that have just as much history as the rest of the city. In this blog, we'll be talking about the second oldest pub in New York: the White Horse Tavern.

Built in 1880, White Horse Tavern began serving the men working the piers on the Hudson river. Fast forward a few decades, the pub became popular amongst writers and artists. You've probably heard of some of the famous people that have walked through its doors: Dylan Thomas, Jack Kerouac, E.E. Cummings, Jim Morrison, Bob Dylan, and Ernest Hemingway, just to name a few. You can read more about the prominent figures who have visited the pub here.

White Horse Tavern has been through a few owners now, with the most recent being Eytan Sugarman, who is now also one of our tenants. There was some controversy when Eytan first purchased the pub, with rumors going around that he had a plan to demolish the building and build another CVS location, but this couldn't have been farther from the truth. Instead, Eytan wanted to respect White Horse Tavern's history and preserve its legacy while still making some necessary infrastructure updates to the building.

"The Horse" is located at 567 Hudson St and is open every day of the week, which makes it the perfect meeting spot for locals and tourists alike. Given its popularity since the 1880s, it's also no surprise that the White Horse Tavern is renowned for its food and drink options. While their menu selections change from time to time, you can always find an up-to-date menu on their website. They have classic app and dinner options, like french onion soup, tuna tartare, and Guinness braised beef, and then out-of-the-box options like their B.E.C. (burger, egg, and cheese) and their 5-cheese nachos. For patrons with a sweet tooth, they also serve a classic New York cheesecake and bread pudding.

If you're interested in visiting the White Horse Tavern, we suggest making reservations because this place gets packed. We're so excited to be such a huge part in the White Horse Tavern's history, and we can't wait to see what it continues to turn into as time passes.
